In 2010, the Girls in Energy programme launched in the UK, a collaboration with North East Scotland College and Fife College. It’s a one-year course for students aged 14 – 17, which explores the energy industry and some of the most pressing challenges we face in the world today. They get to see first-hand the role engineering plays in meeting the growing energy demand in a sustainable and innovative way. Participants also learn about careers in the energy industry and the impact these can have on themselves and our world.
Students from across north-east Scotland attended the annual Girls in Energy conference to find out more about NXplorers. They learned problem-solving tools and applied a systems thinking approach to food, water and energy related challenges that are important to both them and their communities.
Participants formed teams and with the support of Shell ambassadors, formulated their own problem statements. They applied NXplorers tools to explore their challenge, create future scenarios, and develop great ideas for a sustainable change.
One of the best quotes of the day came from the winning team, who concluded their winning presentation about reducing energy consumption related to fashion with “the best thing you can wear is a great attitude!".
