Inspiring the next generation of innovators: exploring the NXplorers Junior programme in India

In a world increasingly defined by technological advancements and complex global challenges, the need to nurture critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation from a young age has never been more crucial. Shell’s NXplorers Junior programme aims to bridge the skills gap by providing early exposure to STEM education, equipping young minds in India with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to tackle real-world issues and excel academically and professionally.

THE VISION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NXPLORERS JUNIOR

The NXplorers Junior programme is an initiative designed to spark curiosity and inspire innovation among younger students aged 10 to 13. It aims to develop essential skills by involving students in hands-on projects that address significant challenges related to food, energy, and water. In India, the programme is delivered as a full-day workshop facilitated by trained educators selected by NXplorers’ implementation partners. The workshop is structured into six interactive steps: Inspire, Amaze, Create, Research & Invent, Choose and Develop, and Present and Send.

During these workshops, students explore critical domains such as the Food-Water-Energy nexus and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). They delve into global challenges, research potential solutions, and present their innovative ideas, thereby gaining a holistic understanding of the world and their potential to make a difference.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EARLY STEM INTERVENTION

Tailoring NXplorers for younger children, especially in India, addresses several critical needs. Government and low-income private schools often face significant learning gaps, as highlighted by the ASER 2022 report, which indicates that only 25% of grade 5 students can perform basic division and only 42% can read a grade 2 text. These gaps hinder students’ ability to engage in critical thinking and dialogue from a young age.

Addressing these disparities early on is crucial. Early exposure to STEM education not only bridges learning gaps but also equips students with the skills needed to excel academically and professionally. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises experiential and holistic learning, aiming to transform India’s educational landscape. By aligning NXplorers with NEP 2020, this supports the government’s vision of fostering innovative and analytical thinking among young students.

Moreover, focusing on younger children helps break down stereotypes about who can succeed in STEM fields. By engaging a diverse group of students early on, the programme inspires future scientists, engineers, and innovators, not only enhancing their 21st-century skills but cultivating a generation that is better prepared to meet future challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.

SUCCESS STORIES AND IMPACT

The success of the NXplorers Junior programme is evident in the innovative projects developed by young participants. From creating sustainable water filtration systems to designing energy-efficient solutions for their communities, these students demonstrate remarkable creativity and problem-solving skills. Their enthusiasm and innovative spirit not only address local issues but also contribute to global sustainability goals.

THE 'MOSQUITO MIST SHIELD' PROJECT

The Mosquito Mist Shield project by Jaigopal Garodia Government Girls Higher Secondary School students was awarded first prize at the National Science Day at SRM University. Utilising medicinal leaves, their project repurposed waste into a mosquito-repelling powder.

A survey involving 7,016 participants provided insights into the programme’s impact. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with 97% of students feeling confident in dealing with real-world problems, 99% expressing interest in pursuing STEM careers, and most highlighting enhanced understanding of STEM concepts and improved critical thinking abilities.

In 2023, the NXplorers India programme was recognised by NITI Aayog, the Government of India’s planning body, who invited the team to pilot NXplorers as part of the ‘Atal Innovation Mission,’ a national drive to impart STEM education to students.

ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE

Despite the significant challenges faced by young students in India, including high dropout rates and limited educational opportunities, the NXplorers programme offers a beacon of hope. By fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and STEM skills from an early age, the programme makes learning enjoyable and meaningful, equipping students with the tools to navigate and overcome obstacles.

"Our aspirations for the young people involved in the NXplorers program are ambitious yet achievable. We envision these students growing into confident, innovative thinkers who are not only prepared to tackle the challenges of the future but also to drive sustainable development in their communities and beyond. Through NXplorers, we aim to nurture a generation of problem-solvers who can contribute to India's economic growth and technological advancement." says Deepak Joshi, Shell India Corporate Relations Advisor

He continues: "We are committed to providing continuous support and opportunities for these students, helping them to further develop their skills and knowledge. We aspire for them to become leaders in their respective fields, inspiring others and creating a ripple effect of positive change. By instilling a strong foundation in STEM and critical thinking, we hope to empower these young minds to realise their full potential and pursue fulfilling and impactful careers"
